I often hear professionals getting an MBA to get ahead in the Corporate World. I wondered why? When I was in college, a Master’s degree in whatever is always the talks among teachers so they become deans or get ahead in the Academic World. Right before graduation, I heard my classmates plan their way through to Graduate School and study again. Me? I was so eager to work. I didn’t know of any career path or direction in life. I just wanted to earn and be more financially independent. At work, some of my office mates were also in Grad School. I felt stuck so I tried and enrolled myself not in Grad School but a few units in Education. I wanted to be a teacher but then I did not have the perseverance to finish it. I think it was because I didn’t have a concrete idea in mind on what to do with it.
I started reading news on the web and I often read about Harvard Business School, the Ivy Leagues and MBA, only this time I couldn’t care less. Years and years passed and I finally followed the Corporate career that I wanted. It was after I gave birth that the strong desire to pursue it came. I became an HR Practitioner. What I learned in college, I realized, were far from the real life of a Human Resource Person. It was overwhelming. I loved it, I loved it very much that I started dreaming of becoming a Manager one day. Then came the greatest mentor I’ve had, and she made me see the oh so many things I still have to learn. She also said Grad School will advance me, not because of the title but because I will learn new concepts and would broaden my understanding, and that a good school matters.
I went to the University of the Philippines to inquire and I was told that there is no Grad School for Psychology, and that they are offering MBA. Again? I enlisted myself nevertheless. As I was approaching the filing time, circumstances pushed me to move away from the city. I had to be a mother and a housewife(while writing this article, I am preparing my ingredients for cooking). I guess MBA has to wait. I found myself a job, online. I met few great businessmen who made use of the internet technology to earn and make a living. I heard of business plans/proposals, dreams, making a difference globally, ultimate goals. Then I realized what MBA means. Schools in the Philippines teaches one to be a good employee not business people. I think this is why wealthy businessmen send their children abroad to study and get an MBA so they can better understand and in return run their businesses here soon. An MBA is not for one to get ahead in the Corporate world but to design a business model that would benefit the world. This is why the rich becomes richer and the poor remain where they are. We lack the courage to be businessmen because we lack the training and discipline. I was too engrossed with becoming an award-winning employee when I should have been a great entrepreneur.
How to become one now that this dawned on me would mean another article to write, I have yet to learn and tackle some other time. I should have taken that MBA years ago though I still believe that one doesn’t have to have an MBA to work on becoming an entrepreneur, but it sure needs a whole lot of studying to master it.

And the list goes on…Life cannot rely on luck alone. Some things need hard work and a strong character. Honesty makes a difference, too! 🙂
