This title phrase I heard from one of Marie Forleo’s interview. Marie Forleo is one of the most interesting people on the internet so far and her interviews on YouTube have been one of my greatest resources for inspiration and everything that feels good. The interview was in 2016 and it was her 1st interview with Seth Godin. The topic was about calling and what makes it very interesting is its straightforward message to everyone waiting for that “perfect purpose”.
The discussion was so profound for me as most people hesitate to live the life they want because they’re waiting for the perfect calling or perfect purpose. I know I did. Often we find ourselves in the waiting game for a long time that we miss every chance of providing solutions to problems, write something, fall in love, end a dysfunctional relationship for a fresh start, get started on a career or a business. The waiting game had us paralyzed as we hoped for some magic to appear and that made us question whether there is something out there for us.
The romantic notion of a ‘calling or a purpose’ that would one day sweep us away is what’s making some to sit down and wait for it to come. I realized as it’s making sense to me today that purpose and calling is a conscious decision one makes every single day. It was the job we applied for, the volunteer work we joined or is wanting to join, it is the entrepreneurial endeavor we have dreamed of or the business we have started. Like falling in love, we want the magic but not the hard work our purpose and calling entails. We are suspended in between everything we do. Try out everything and drop them the minute they become mundane or challenging. We carefully craft the dream in our heads but then it is so easy to throw both our hands up when things get rough.
The biggest bump on the road for many who wishes to pursue what they love is that they’re presently living in the unknown future. The truth is, even the work we do now is going to eventually align us to what sparks us inside. The road will lead us to what our heart yearns as we move along tackling each obstacle and celebrating each win. It’s going to be hazy on some days but crystal clear the next. Sometimes we take a detour but we always find the way. Trusting our inner voice that every day is an opportunity to share our gifts. If you feel you haven’t arrived, then prepare today by showing up and giving your best. Excellence is a journey, it comprises of the little habits we develop and the narrative we tell ourselves. The one’s we say loudest wins. The good news is that we get to choose.
